building a RAID Array Server a few questions?
do any of you know any answers to the following
where can i get cheap HDD's or for free (im intending to use IDE ones)
preferably all the same size as there is no point them shrinking if i can help it
can I use Multiple PCI cards to control it? and if I have a RAID capable motherboard can i do that, and how about intergrating SATA with it, possable
can I run it on linux and have it intergrate with windows Clients, proberly use ubuntu for it.
how do i go about making it an e-mail server?
i would like to know, so if any of you know anything, please help me
I really don't suggest going cheap with a RAID server, save up some scratch and make it a good one. Best HDDs to use on a server are actually SCSI drives. they are hella quick and I think they are cheaper than SATA. Sorry I can't help you with the Linux question, I've only used Debian and Fedora (and not much of either). Good Luck with that tho. I would also suggest using RAID 5 if I remember correctly it has a built in fault protection to that if one hard drive goes out you won't lose any data, just don't let two go out. otherwise you'll lose data
