Ok, I'm going to Europe this summer. Hungary. I thought I needed a power converter for my laptop, correct? well, I purchased one today, its a voltage converter, I purchased it at radio shack, they said it wouldn't work with hair dryers. So, I guess I'll have to get another one. The electric current in Hungary is 230. I got this thing and is says is converts 220/240VAV foreign electricity to standard US 110/120VAC. Does that mean it won't work with a 230 current? the side of the box says it'll work in most european countries. I need to return it if it doesn't work, so I'd like to know.
First, you probably didn't need a voltage converter for your laptop. I'm writing this answer from Italy on a US laptop without a power converter.
The power supply that comes with your laptop should work with both voltage ranges. It will say something like 100 - 240 V 50/60 Hz on the label. That means it works at input voltages and frequencies in those ranges. 200/240V is the same, it's telling you that it works with the input in that range. What you do need is the adapter that allows the converter to be plugged into the wall socket. It will have two round pins rather than two prongs. They're inexpensive and you can get them at radio shack, target, travel stores, ... However, since you already have the converter, you can use it - it just cost you more and is bigger and bulkier than what you could have bought.
I moved to Italy several years ago and have used my laptops all over Europe including Budapest.
