Looking for a server grade motherboard for gaming..?
I'm looking at using server hardware for a gaming PC. my only requirements for it are that it be Intel, dual processor at least, or quad processor preferably, at least 8GB ram capable, and have the expansion possibility for PCI-E 16x graphics, lots of storage, and surround sound. I'm okay with rackmount as well as tower, if you have a manufacturer recommendation. I know this is a bit of an odd question on here, but hey, someone out there knows the answer ![]()
I'm a really smart computer guy and have seen this done to great success. I have Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit edition (which can address up to 64 GB memory and several terabytes of hard drive) so i know it will work... I'm just looking for a board that has PCI-E 16x and is Intel. I can figure out the rest of it. And servers distribute power differently than desktops because of the Operating System. You can configure Windows XP the same way as a server... so you can do it backwards too...
You dont want a server board for a gaming machine. It distributes the resources differently than a desktop machine, but not to the advantages of a gaming machine. Plus the hardware for server systems are far more expensive. I really dont think it's worth it unless you have $ to burn.
You need a powerful motherboard with 4-6 memory slots. I suggest a gamer board, like the nvidia boards. Be aware of overheating issues. After that, you need an operating system that can handle more than 4GB of ram. So unless you really want to spend $800 on server OS, windows XP 64-bit edition is the way to go for the time being. If you really want to go crazy, you can find a board with dual cpu.
