How Do I Connect to xbox live? do i have the right equipment?

I own an xbox 360 and want to connect to xbox live.
my 360 is in the basement and i have a long ethernet cord to hook it up to my pc located on the main floor, however, last time i hooked the ethernet up to the modem i had to take the cord from the pc out and my parents won't allow that because it messed up the server ip address.
SO....
i recently purchased a linksys 5 port workgroup switch at circuit city because the guy there said it would work.
what do i do now? is this the right switch? or do i need an actual router?
i have a membership card for xbox live, i just need to knopw how EXACTLY i am supposed to hook this up...
help greatly appreciated.
(i need the pc and the xbox 360 hooked up to the internet at the same time, not one or the other)

Not 100% positive, but I think you needed a router not a workgroup switch, since your internet account has most likely only 1 assigned IP address.

I've used a router connected to a high speed cable / dsl internet connection for a while now and it gives no problems.

Worst part about it, usually routers are cheaper than switches. Circuit City was trying to sell that "might work in certain situations" for a more expensive price than something that WILL work 100% of the time for cheaper.

Network switches are more for networking PC to PC or PC to xbox, and with work can share the internet connection.

Routers are just that, they route information to each connected device to the internet. Its a way of sharing the same internet connection.
