Why are there 4 wires in some of my kitchen sockets?
I have recently replaced all of the electrical outlets in my kitchen because I refurbished the whole kitchen.
Most of the sockets have only a white wire, black wire plus ground wire, but four of the sockets in the kitchen have 4 wires - white, black, red and ground. These four sockets have a trip breaker each at the fuse box. I connected the wires to the sockets the way that I thought I had disconnected them from the previous sockets, i.e. white wire to one side, then red and black connected to the opposite side. Ground connected to chassis.
When I turn the power on, the breakers trip straight away. These are the only sockets affected - the rest of the sockets in the house are fine. If l do not connect the 4 sockets, the breakers do not trip.
Can anyone tell me why there is the extra red wire in the sockets? Should the red wire be connected on the same side as the white wire?

Take the recepticles and on the side with the brass screws there is a small tab connecting the two screws. break this off. (it is made so you can do this). Connect black to one screw and red to the other.
