It's been awhile since I served in military, I spent about 26 years in U.S. Navay Reserve, and served two years in a small ship homeported in Japan.
When on active duty, the government provides your uniforms and replaces them with a "clothing allowance". If you tear them up, or lose your boots, it comes out of your own pocket.
Enlisted who are married, or authorized to live "off base" can request housing and food allowances rather than use base facilities for housing and subsistence (food).
Food on base (or on a ship) is provided by military cooks. Officers often have to pay for their own rations, as they are paid more than enlisted.
Personal items like lotions, shaving cream, razor blades, and tooth paste, can be purchased at the PX, or Base Exchange.
Most military installations have their own Commissaries, drug stores, bowling alley, gasoline stations, etc. Military purchases on base do not have state sales taxes, so that saves some money.
All medical supplies, prescriptions and eye glasses are provided free, on an "as needed" basis. .
If you expect to be advanced in rank, you have to attend military schools to learn new skills. Training manuals are provided as needed. Your training is free too.
One of best benefits of serving in the military is retirement.
After 20 years of active duty, you can retire on half-pay for rest of your life, and qualify for full medical insurance once you reach age 60. This helps make up for decades of low pay and following orders, and being on duty, often 24/7.
There is no Overtime Pay for the Military.
