The Wireless-N card is compatible with Wireless-N and Wireless-G, but Wireless-G is only compatible with Wireless-G. If you have a Wireless-G router, you can use both. Wireless-G runs at 54 Megabits per second, and Wireless-N runs at 108 Megabits per second, so it's twice as fast.
If you buy the Wireless-N laptop, you will need to buy a Wireless-N router in the future to see the speed increase, but it will work at the lower speed until you do that.
