how to get more wifi reception?
i currently have a airlink101 awh5026 wifi pci adapter and i want to get more reception i want to buy a rp-sma wifi antenna on ebay. this is one i was looking at....18 dBi 2.4 GHz Wifi Yagi Antenna RP-SMA Booster 18db.its only 20.00 buck......would anyone be able to give me a hand one picking one?
im looking to at least get a quarter mile Radius. an i dont want to spend to much
before you spend any money on hardware, see what you can do to improve your environment.
Line of sight is best,
leaves, paper, people (or anything filled with watery cells) just absorbs signals - especially in 2.4 GHz range. Move or trim plants & trees, or move the access point and your receiver to get better reception.
Interference from other sources can make your signal noisy and lossy -- eliminate (if practical) interference from neighbors by selecting the least-used channel; isolate use of a microwave, and check if anyone nearby is using 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz cordless phones or other devices. See what you can do to mitigate that.
Mirrors DO help to keep signal from going through a wasted wall, and reflect it back to usable area.
If you can make your signal more directional, and avoid broadcasting in wasted directions ( like straight up and straight down) .. simple mods like a $2 spaghetti strainer may help.
I dont want to hawk anyone else's goods.. especially since I don't get a profit.
I did just order 3 wi-fi N-band USB-connected antennas for laptops... they cost about $22 with shipping, looked like a mini (3") sattelite dish, and may have been buffalo or some other brand. Ordered from amazon last month. They extended my range - on a totally clear mountain about 1/3 mile downhill and still gave me about -60 dB. No neighboring signals, no trees in the way, Access point mounted on a roof with line-of-sight.
