looking for a new modem, tired of paying to rent a modem from Comcast, can anyone give me some advice?
I would suggest finding the "approved modem list" for your provider and then purchase a modem from said list. This way, if you have issues of any sort down the road, they can't tell you, "Sorry, you're not using an approved modem" like my provider did.
Onto whether the SBG6580 is "any good" -- The reviews on newegg are a mixed bag. Some folks had issues with it, others loved it but complained about setup issues.
I personally have a Linksys WRT54G wireless accesspoint/router and a Linksys BEFCMU10 cable modem. I've had the WRT54G for 5+ years, and I purchased my modem (open box from newegg) on March 8, 2007. I initially had issues with the WRT54G dropping wireless connections fairly frequently, but as soon as I switched to the open source "Tomato" firmware, it's been a rock solid device. The cable modem has never given me any issues.
