How does a wireless hotspot work and what do I need in my laptop to use it?

Wireless hotspots are basically Wifi networks in places like airports, cafes, etc. Some cities are even blanketing themselves in Wifi internet to allow public access for everyone. To connect, you need a wireless adapter. This can be built in to the laptop when you order it (check the site to see if it mentions built in wifi/wireless, typically it's optional so make sure you choose it), or you can buy a wifi adapter from companies such as Netgear, Linksys, etc. that plug into the PCMI slot or USB slot (depending on which model you get) of the laptop on the side and enable the computer to go online.
That's about it. Some places, like Starbucks, may require you pay a fee to use the hotspot, in order to get an access key or permissions, but many places, like airports, libraries, etc. allow you to use it for free.
As for broadband, I recommend going for a cable provider such as Charter or Comcast, then setting up a wireless router between the modem and your home PC. It's a very easy process to do.
The only wireless internet provider I know if is Clearwire, however I don't know much about the quality of their service... Since it's wireless, I wouldn't really expect much from it but maybe someone with experience could answer that.
