Should I bother with gigabit ethernet switch at home?
I am setting up a home network - had pre-wired everything with CAT6 and have about 16 terminations. I understand CAT6 is capable of gigabit speeds, which is the reason why I got the more expensive CAT6 cable installed throughout the house. But the questions that I have at the moment is - is a gigabit ethernet switch (16 port or 24 port) overkill if the bottleneck is always going to be read/write on hard drive (on NAS)? Should I just save the $150 and get the 10/100Mbps switch instead as that is more than adequate to handle whatever video/audio/files/streaming?
Unless you purchased a really lousy NAS device it is very much worth it since the NAS device would not be the bottleneck.
The very first SATA drives had a top throughput of 1.5Gbit/sec. Newer ones are at 6Gb/s. So the drive is not your bottleneck. USB 3.0 can (supposedly) do up to 5GB/s. Would you appreciate your network being 50x slower than a thumbdrive?
I can say from painful experience that when copying large files I want all the network bandwidth I can get. Plus unless you are the only person in your home some other people might also be doing something on the network when you are moving files and could use the bandwidth as well.
If the extra $150 is painful, then don't do it but if it's not worth your time for files to move in 10 minutes vs. 100 minutes then go with gig. Like you said, streaming doesn't use a lot of bandwidth so if that is truly all you are doing or plan to do then go cheap.
