what would the best job be; air force traffic controller or air-port traffic controller?
i am very interested in becoming a air traffic controller of some sort.
wether it be in the air force or an an international air port. im 16 and currently studding an advanced diploma in computer systems engineering. this course runs for 4 and a half years.
will this qualification help me get this kind of job? who would have better pay and benefits? what job would be harder or easer?
Air Force Traffic Controller or Air-port traffic controller? That's confusing. I'm an Air Traffic Controller. I started out in the Air Force and made the jump to the civilian side after 10 years active duty. I'm still an Air Traffic Controller. Gaining Air Traffic Control (atc) experience through the Air Force is probably the quickest way to become a Controller. The FAA does have a few ATC colleges, that offer job placement. From my experience though, those controllers have the hardest time adapting. Being an Air Traffic Controller is a very rewarding job, both monetarily and personally, but it comes at a price. The job is stressful and demanding. Starting pay for a Controller coming out of one of the colleges is only about $40 grand a year, my starting pay in the FAA was $106 grand a year because of my ATC experience. There are 3 entities to ATC: 1. Center Controllers 2. Tower Controllers 3. Approach Controllers/RAPCON/TRACON. Center Controllers (for the most part) get paid the most, but they work in an environment that has 400 or so Controllers and can be responsible for hundreds of miles of airspace. Tower Controllers are responsible for about a 5 mile radius of the airport up to 3,000 feet, responsibilities include clearing aircraft for take-off and clearing to land. Approach Controllers are responsible for the (instrument) approaches into specific airports, sometimes up to 20 different airports, and they own (usually) about 50 miles of airspace up to 10,000 feet. Obviously, this varies depending on the facility. Go into the Air Force guaranteed to be an Air Traffic Controller, spend 4 or 6 years and either make a career of ATC and the Air Force or get out and seek employment with the civilian sector (FAA) or (DOD).
