pre loaded XP system, Can I add win 98 or will I have to reformat?
I have a system that came preloaded with XP. I want 98 as well. Can I partition the drive and add 98 or am I looking at reformating the drive?
It's not anywhere near that easy. Generally speaking dual boot setups with Microsoft operating systems requires them to be installed in order from oldest to newest. There are ways to get
around that, but it's a hassle. First off, most likely your Windows XP installation is NTFS and Windows 98 cannot read the NTFS file system, secondly ,you'd have to resize your existing disk partition and that would require a partitioning program such as PartitionMagic or Acronis Partition Manager.
You'd also have to convert your Windows XP partition to FAT 32 so that Windows 98 can read it's boot files (which will be placed on the first partition of the first disk, in this case your Windows XP partition). The other problem is that after doing all this, the installation of Windows 98 in the second partition will "break" Windows XP boot files (ntdetect.com, boot.ini and ntldr) requiring you to go back and boot to the Windows XP install disk and run a repair installation on the Windows XP partition. Once that's done, it'll work.
Here are the steps you'd have to take if you wanted XP first, then 98 on your system.
1. Create another partition on the disk using a partitioning program
2. Convert your Windows XP partition to FAT 32
3. Install Windows 98 on the newly created partition
4. Boot to your Windows XP CD and run a repair installation on the Windows XP partition.
The only other way is to use your partitioning program to "hide" the Windows XP partition from Windows 98 when it's installing. This will force Windows 98 to install its boot files to its own partition, and not the first partition of the first disks, which in your case is in NTFS. This setup, however, would require the use of a third party boot loader.
You'd be better off starting from scratch. If you start from scratch, do it this way.
Create 3 partitions. (3 partitions are not absolutely necessary, however, having a dedicated boot partition makes things easier later when you want to remove an operating system.)
1. First partition would be a small FAT 32 boot partition, this is where all the boot files for all the OS's will reside
2. Create a second FAT 32 partition for Windows 98
3. Create a third partition in NTFS for Windows XP.
Install Windows 98 on the second partition, Windows XP on the third.
UPDATED RESPONSE:
You CANNOT do what Archer suggests for two reasons:
1. The Windows 98 CD is not bootable
2. Your Windows XP partiton is in almost all likelihood in NTFS, which Windows 98 cannot read, nor can a dos setup disk.
