How do run two computers off of one modem box? For DSL.?
Okay, so I have one computer downstairs, and one on the top level. I have the blue cord thingy, which I think is called an Ethernet cable, and I have the filter kit. And I have a phone chord. I can't get a wireless adapter, so what else can I do?
Sorry, I am kind of slow on computers. What's a router?
You will need a router with a switch function. You should be able to get them at most computer stores. Just explain to the IT staff what you need and they should be able to point you in the right direction.
Look for a router that has a 4-port switch integrated in the same box. Then connect one end of the Ethernet cable (the blue cable that you already have) to the modem and the other end to the router/switch.
You will also need another two Ethernet cables. One (a shorter one) to go from the router/switch to the PC that is located next to the modem. Then the other (longer) cable to go from the router/switch to the other computer (the upstairs one?).
If you do not want to pull a long cable to the other PC, then find a router/switch that also has a wireless function. Then get a USB wireless adapter for the other PC.
The filter kit goes in between the phone jack and the modem. The filter kit should also have another phone jack to connect to the phone.
