ok so i was looking at this patch cable and it is cat5e cable and i noticed that that the color codes are different on each side. i thought that you were supposed to use the same color codes on each side. but apparently one side is white,orange,white blue, white green, white purple. the other side is different. is this correct? what are the right color codes?

A cross over cable will allow the transmission of data from one pc to another with out the use of a hub / or router
however you can not just plug in a cross over cable and think it will work , because it will not . the tcpip settings on each pc's nic card will have to be set to a private IP scheme so each pc is able to communicate . and both then will need to be set in the same workgroup
