Is the only job of the SFP module to convert copper to optical or back? If I have an all copper 10GbE network, do I still need SFPs? If so, why, what do they do?
If your equipment does not have RJ45 ports then yes you need the SFPs to provide them. SFPs are similar in concept to the AUI transceivers of old - the interface provided by the network hardware is generic in nature and inappropriate for _any_ physical medium. You will need the appropriate SFP to provide the interface for the media you are using.
