I have heard of a KVM, but even that only allows for a stack of 24 servers to be controlled. Is that what they use, KVM's or is there something bigger and better that I don't know about?
A KVM is one way, another way is to allow remote access into the computer- but have it set up so only certain computers are allowed to do this, with certain accounts. Most of the time, when dealing with a scenario like the one you said, the servers act as a single server, or a cluster. This way if one fails, not everything is down and lost until the server comes back up.
