How far away are you from the wireless router? The maximum range "line of sight" is about 140 meters. The maximum range in a home is considerably less, usually about 30 meters. And that's the LIMIT; at the fringe of the limit you won't get a good signal. Also, if there are more walls, especially walls with metal or concrete, the range drops. I've seen a friend's home that has issues going between floors because of the cold air return ducts and the placement of the wireless router.
Also, does he have security set up on the router as he should or is it wide open? If he has security set up on the router and you don't have the settings, it will show that you have limited connectivity because your system won't be allowed to connect even though your system can detect the signal.
