How to tell if you PCI modem doubles as sound card.?
I want to remove my old pci dial up modem but i dont know if it doubles as the sound card, and ideas on how to tell?
Easy enough... if the input cord for your speakers plugs into the card, its doubling as your sound card.
It's been a long time since I've seen those old double-duty sound/modem cards! Some were pressed onto a single board... others had one main board with a daughter card that split off for extra connections.
Pop open the side of your computer and identify the modem and sound card(s). You should be able to tell which is which by following the external cables. The modem will have either one or two phone jacks on it and the sound card will have standard miniplugs for the connection of your speakers. Once you see where the phone lines and speakers plug in take a close look at those cards. Are they completely seperate? Or are they connected to each other?
If you have a single card that everything plugs into (or a single card with a ribbon cable that leads to another set of ports for the other connections), then you have one of the old double-duty cards.
If both cards appear completely seperate, then you have job-specific hardware.
As a final test, when you are certain you have identified the modem card, CAREFULLY remove it and set it aside. Fire the computer back up and test it. If you can still hear sound, you've now confimed you have single-purpose cards. If no longer have sound then your cards were dual-purpose. Turn the machine off and re-install the modem card you removed. Everything should be back the way you were with no harm done.
