I recently bought an antenna for my Huawei EC228 card to help improve my signal strength and speed for my Alltel internet. I was averaging about 70% signal, -70dBm, and downloads about 700KBs.
When I plugged in the new antenna, I immediately jumped to 100% signal and dropped to -51dBm-- but when I started on the internet it was twice as SLOW as before. I dropped to about 100KBs downloads. Thinking it was problem with the antenna, I bought a completely different booster antenna on the 3gStoreand once again a jump to 100%, a dBm drop and twice as slow internet.
I've got to say, this is stumping me. However, I looked up the specs for the Huawei EC228 and it apparently has an internal antenna, though I didn't see any mention of a place to include an external one. Did someone at the store recommend this? If so, I'd bring it to their attention and either make them support their product or refund your money.
The only thing I can come up with that *might* be a factor in this is that with increased electromagnetic activity, your antenna might actually be causing interference in the data signal. Normally this is something you'll see when you put a data wire next to something that creates an electromagnetic field - like putting your DSL modem next to a blender - though in your case, if this really IS supposed to be an external antenna designed for your phone, that realy shouldn't be the case.
