How many Mw of transmit power does a standard Wi-Fi adapter /router have?
I am struggling to connect to a Access Point (AP) from about 250-300 meters away with a standard USB dongle with SMA connector and a 12dbi external antenna in my loft and I only have around 20% connection despite the manufactures of my 12dbi antenna saying that the range would be considerably more .
I was considering buying a 500mw adapter instead of my usb one and wondered would this increase my range and speed. ? And seriously boost my antenna performance and maximize its capabilities; or is 500mw of power pretty stranded and am wasting my time and money?
Fitting a 'burner' is totally illegal in the UK and might end up with your kit being confiscated by the Anti-Terrorist squad .. whilst I believe some external antenna are permitted, any purchased from USA are likley illegal in UK as well.
I suggest EITHER move your base station / install a 'repeater' closer to your PC,
OR rig up some sort of 'reflector' to make the WiFi more 'directional' ... radiation is 'emitted' from the 'sides' of the antenna, not the 'point' .... and don't forget it's a two way 'conversation', so for best connection, both 'ends' should be equipped with external antenna and 'aligned' side to side ..
Unless you live miles from nowhere, even your existing attempts to boost the range could causing your neighbours no end of interference problems, which ends with a call from the Council (and your very own ASBO 
)
